Even as a child I was fascinated with “fringe” sciences and unusual developments in social order. As a young Cub Scout I just happened to be introduced to Honeywell’s early experiments with LASER technology. The den leader worked in the lab. Photos of a laser burning through a razorblade caught my imagination. Of course, when I tried to explain this technology to others I met with utter disbelief- that light could have this kind of power. Now, of course, lasers make what I am doing at this moment possible. I also asserted that by the time I entered college there would be pocket-size calculating devices. “That takes a whole room full of tubes and capacitors!” was the thinking at that time. Amazing how thinking differently can lead to wonderful- or disastrous relsults. Met with scoffing laughter then, I received a TI calculator as a high-school graduation present.
