I wonder what function a monarchy can have in the 21t century. Someone made a statement about something “injuring the monarchy” today, and I couldn’t help thinking how little this could matter in our time. What possible need is there for a monarchy, when representative government throughout the world is possible. I didn’t just say “is” or ‘should’, I mean “possible,” meaning the burden is on the minds of powerful people. All the monarchies are irrelevant in our time, but some still continue among people who still believe in “divine appointment.” All that remains is for people to reject this assumption, to come willing into the 21st century, especially those who wield power. That might be difficult to arrange. It might be messy. It will happen.
